Stocker Headshot

DR. JAMES R. STOCKER

Historian of US Foreign Relations

I am a professor of global affairs at Trinity Washington University, where I research and teach about the history of U.S. foreign relations. My work explores how historical perspectives can shed light on contemporary problems, from the Arab-Israeli conflict and the Lebanese Civil War to nuclear arms control and the role of infrastructure in the expansion of settler colonialism in North America.

I’ve served on Federal Advisory Committee on the Freedom of Information Act and in numerous roles in the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR). From 2019 to 2021, I was the executive director of the Trinity Global Leadership Initiative. I’m currently the co-Chair of Trinity’s Academic Executive Committee.

My research and studies have taken me around the world — I’ve lived for lengthy periods in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Lebanon, among other countries, experiences that continue to shape how I teach and write about international affairs.
